enduring eye rolls for a good cause - a PSA

Even when Eli was a tiny, unmoving infant, I worried about the television falling on him. I'd tell Josh to play away from the tv. He'd roll his eyes and say "it's NOT going to fall on him."

When he started pulling up on furniture, I begged Josh to please find a way to anchor it. He'd roll his eyes and say "it's NOT going to fall on him."

Finally I went downstairs and found some strong twine in Josh's tool stash. I anchored the tv myself, tying it about ten times on each side to the banister behind it. I felt enormously better; Josh rolled his eyes and said "it's NOT going to fall on him." Not now!, I was thinking.

Recently we moved our TV operation to a new spot and I told Josh he needed to find a new way to anchor it since there was no longer a handy-dandy banister behind it. You guessed it--he rolled his eyes and said "it's NOT going to fall on him." Once again, almost beggingly, I said please do it. Do it for me. It is important to me. He rolled his eyes again, but he said he'd pick up an anchor strap on his way home from work the next day. He anchored it a few nights ago.

Don't you know Eli tipped the TV over last night?!

He tossed something behind the tv and was trying to reach behind to retrieve it and the TV tipped forward right off the stand, nearly smashing him. Josh was sitting in his chair beside the TV and he reached his hand over to "catch" it. The strap worked (Thank you, Lord!) and as I snatched up my monkey-child and hugged him hard, Josh was catching his breath from the scare. I gave him a told-you-so look and he gave me an I-was-wrong look. Thankyouverymuch.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, last year there were an estimated 42,700 injuries and 180 deaths from furniture and TV tipover accidents. Please take care to anchor your furniture. And if you have to endure some eye rolls, just know it's all worth it.

We actually upgraded to a flat screen for this very reason. We used to have a heavy tube TV and it sat on a wobbly TV stand. Rachel would play with the videos in the bottom of the stand and pull herself up on the stand, and I could just see that old TV falling on her one day. So no eye rolls from me...

Wow! So glad that you had that anchor strap! I believe that was mother's intuition kicking in for you too.

I had a similiar situation that happened a while ago. My husband and I were debating the position of a TV in our house because I felt like our son could move it. Later, my husband actually saw that it was a hazard and fixed it.

One day, these men are going to listen to us! :-) I'm following you now too. Have a great weekend!

Wow - that was a close one. I had a hall cabinet (tall slender) tip over when one of my children was playing near it once several years ago. That was very scary!
